This is a mens trilby styled fedora hat marketed under a private label “Alan Goouch Menswear”. Alan Goouch was an English immigrant to Canada, settling in Toronto in 1964, and opening two stores in 1968. Goouch targeted Toronto’s youth culture - in his words, there was no market for “mods” in Toronto at that time, so he imported English fashion to satisfy the unserviced market demand. This hat probably dates to the late 60s or early 70s.
The hat is made of quality fur felt in black. The crown has a matching grosgrain band and bow around its base with a feather accent. The lining is silver stamped “Alan Goouch Menswear 776 Yonge St. Toronto, Ont.”. The sweatband is silver stamped “Genuine Fur Felt” and with a Montreal retailer’s name - it appear that Goouch was also wholesaling hats. There is a cardboard label that sizes the hat as a 7 1/4. It measures 22 1/2” around the sweat band and 8” by 6 1/2” across the opening. The brim measures 2” in width and the crown measures 5” in height. The hat is in excellent condition - it looks to have seen little or no use. Of course, a lint brushing may be necessary.
This is a very nice quality fedora - I’m unsure of the manufacturer as this is a private label item, but it obviously was made by one of the major hat making companies.
