This is a gorgeous old hand sequined bird appliqué that came from the remaining inventory of the workshop of a lady who had a trim and sequining business from the 1930s through to the 1960s.  She supplied many of the dressmakers and couturiers located in Canada and the US.  I estimate that this piece most likely dates to the 1930s or 40s due to its style and the type of sequins used.  It is hand applied onto a buckram type mesh backing - it is quite impressive how much work went into this.  It measures 7 1/2” across its wings and 5 1/2” in length along its body (note scale as posed on dress).  Striking red and black colour combination on this piece - superior brilliance as these, I believe, are the old gelatin type sequins.  Wonderful piece to incorporate into a creation of your own!
