This is a lovely old hand sequinned floral appliqué that came from the remaining inventory of the workshop of a lady who had a trim and sequining business from the 1930s through to the 1960s.  She supplied many of the dressmakers and couturiers located in Canada and the US.  I estimate that this piece most likely dates to the 1940s due to its style and the type of sequins used.  It is hand applied onto a buckram type mesh backing - it is quite impressive how much work went into this.  It measures 5” by 5 5/8” (note scale as posed on dress).  Striking purple and black colour combination on this piece - superior brilliance as these, I believe, are the old gelatin type sequins.  Wonderful piece to adorn a simple black dress - 40s sophistication!
