This is a vintage mens pork pie hat, a style popular during the 1940s into the 50s, often associated with jazz tenor saxophonist Lester Young. The hat is made in the form of a flat top fedora, but with a taller crown than normally seen on a pork pie. It has a 2” upturned brim that can be posed down if wished. The hat is made in an attractive navy blue colour and decorated with a very wide grosgrain band around the base of the crown that culminates in a bow at the back. The hat is lined.
Age: probably 1950s
Label: Royal Stetson on lining. Royal Stetson and Aquanized Stetson gold stamped on the sweatband
Material: Fur felt
Size: 7 1/8 (medium). The label, as mentioned, also reads “Custom Made”. The opening measures 22 1/2” around the sweatband, and 6 3/4” by 7 3/4” across. The crown measures 4 1/4” in height.
Condition: It is in very good condition with no wear or staining - this hat looks to have seen little use and was well stored over the years.
This is a very nice quality hat in a hard to find pork pie style - unusual wide band!
