Vintage Portuguese Pottery Crab Plate Palissy Majolica Portugal
$225.00

This is a wonderful old Palissy style majolica plate featuring a three dimensional representation of a crab in its natural habitat, surrounded by mussels, seaweed and sand. The original French Bernard Palissy examples date to the 16th century, but Portuguese potters started reproducing similar pieces during the late 19th century and well into the 20th century. Among the Portuguese potteries who produced Palissy ware are Mafra, Jose A. Cuhna, Alves, José Francisco de Sousa, Cezar, Herculano Elias, and Augusto Baptista de Carvalho. This piece is unsigned except for the impressed number 1164. Difficult to date precisely but 1940s - 1950s is likely a proper dating. The plate measures 13 1/4 in diameter with a height of about 3. It is in very good condition with no noted defect, except for a tiny white dot on the crab‘s back, really nothing. Please note that the rope at the back is oriented one way, but there are two additional holes should you want to hang it the other way. This is an attractive piece - wonderful form and decoration, great addition to a majolica or botanical collection or simply as a lovely display piece!
