This is a vintage men’s morning coat dated on the tailor’s label to January 1966. It is made of a quality black wool - I’ve lightened the photos a bit so that you can see detailing, and some might call this dark charcoal grey, but it is essentially black. It has padded shoulders, peaked lapels, a chest pocket at the left, a single double button closure, three button cuffs and two buttons at the back. The interior is lined in a satin fabric, perhaps viscose. No pants are included
Label: Tailleur M.A. Brodeau Montreal
Tailor’s label: M.A. Brodeau Tailleur - Mercerie 9, Ouest, Notre Dame, Montreal Dr. Edmond Synnott Date Jan/66.
Dr. Synnott (1932-2018) was a Montreal based physician and hospital administrator as well as a Montreal municipal councillor and a Lieutenant-Colonel with the Canadian Reserve Army Medical Corps, serving from 1961 until 1971 in addition to other service with the reserve. He was known as a man of faith, a family man, and someone of great generosity. You can wear this morning coat with pride knowing that the original owner was a man of distinction..
Sizing: Being custom tailored there is no size, but this will fit a large size, perhaps a modern size 44, maybe 46, and would accommodate some girth. Please rely on the following measurements for fit, comparing them to another jacket that you may own or your body measurements, allowing some room for fit:
Shoulders: 20 1/2” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 25 1/2” long taken from the shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17” long
Chest: 48” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 48” around
Overall length: 44“ to the bottom at the back
Condition: It is in very good condition with no wear, tear, holes, nibbles, stains or odours. This morning coat appears to have seen little use and has been very well cared for the last 54 years.
This is a very nice quality morning coat - beautiful piece for a formal occasion!
