Vintage Mens Marmot Fur Coat Made in Italy High Quality Not Mink
Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is a super quality men's Siberian marmot fur coat. The coat belonged to a very wealthy financier - his name is embroidered in the lining but I have obscured it in the photos in the interest of privacy. It was bought at Brisson & Brisson of Montreal, an exclusive Montreal boutique that was frequented by a wealthy clientele. The coat was made in Italy for Brisson & Brisson and is beautifully constructed with a lot of attention to detail - it just smacks of quality. It features a rather mod style with tailored waist and slight flair to the hemline. It is made with notched lapels and has a six button double breasted closure. It has button down protective flaps at the upper front and a protective flap across the upper back very much like a trench coat would have. The buttonholes are reinforced with leather, the pockets have leather trim on the openings and the cuffs have button down leather belts. The back of the collar and the interior of the opening at either side is also reinforced with leather. The interior of the coat is lined in a quilted fabric and there is a suede patch across the interior upper back that is perforated with B & B. There is one suede leather patch pocket on the interior. I’m unsure of its age, but it could date to the 1970s given its styling, difficult to say for sure.
Labels: “Brisson & Brisson" gold stamped on a leather patch on the interior side. “Made in Italy” appears at the back interior neck. “Marmotta Siberiana / Marmel / Marmot” are gold stamped on another leather patch on the other interior side from the Brisson label.
Brisson & Brisson was an exclusive men’s clothing boutique located in Montreal that closed some 20 years ago. It was favoured by Canadian business and political elite and Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau was a regular customer there - Trudeau was quite the fashion plate in his prime, just look at some photos of him during the 60s and 70s. Brisson & Brisson carried high-end private label fashion that was contracted to manufacturers of exclusive brands - they definitely worked with Brioni, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they also did business with Gucci. Anything that you bought at Brisson & Brisson was of exceptional quality. I’m unsure of who precisely made this, but it definitely was a high-end Italian manufacturer. I believe that Brisson & Brisson closed its doors some 15 years ago.
Sizing: Size 56 is indicated, but this is an old Italian sizing. It should fit a medium size, probably a US size 38 depending on preference for fit and whether you would want to wear a suit jacket underneath - please rely on the following measurements for fit (compare measurements with a similar coat that you presently own or to your own body measurements, taking the cut of the garment and thickness of fur into account):
Shoulders: 21” across from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeves: 26” from the shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve inseam: 18”
Chest: 42” around, taken under the arms (21” from pit to pit)
Waist: 40” around
Hips: 45” around
Overall length: 45”, measured flat
Condition: It is in very good condition with no wear, tear or other defect. Marmot is a very robust fur, so this coat should have many years of use left in it. It has been well cared for and stored over the years. Last two photos are of the cuff area and the hemline.
This is a rather rare men’s fur coat - it would have been a very expensive coat so probably not many would have been made. Great dandy look -fabulous coat if it fits!
