This is a mens fedora hat marketed under a private label “Charles Ogilvy Ltd Rideau St”. Charles Ogilvy started with a smaller store in 1887, but constructed the department store in 1907 that was to become such a success in Ottawa, Canada. Ogilvy’s department store was so well run that, because of it and a handful of other Ottawa stores, major chains could not enter the Ottawa market until the 1950s. It had a particular reputation for quality.
The hat is made of quality fur felt in charcoal gray, almost black. The crown has a black grosgrain band and bow around its base. The sweatband is silver stamped “Genuine Fur Felt” and with “Royal Citadelle”. There is a cardboard label that sizes the hat as a 7 1/4. It measures 22 1/4” around the sweatband and 7 3/4” by 6 1/2” across the opening. The brim measures 2 1/4” in width and the crown measures 4 1/2” in height. The hat is in very good condition - of course, a lint brushing may be necessary and a cleaning would be beneficial, although the hat is very usable as is.
This is a nice quality fedora - I’m unsure of the manufacturer as this is a private label item, but it obviously was made by one of the major hat making companies.
