This is a wonderful hat made in the “short back sailor” style, featuring a wide brim at the front and a very short brim at the back. Although the sailor style usually features a flat brim, the front brim on this hat has the added feature of being shaped in two raised points, or three curved sections, almost like a batwing. The front center of the brim has an art deco plastic clip that is studded with rhinestones affixed to it. The brim is made of velvet while the crown is made of felt. The edge of the brim is reinforced with wire. The round crown and the front brim are trimmed with white feather quills with wispy feathers. There is no maker’s label. The opening measures 19 3/4” around, but this is supposed to fit on the top of the back head, so this should fit a range of sizes small to small medium. There is an elastic strap for securing the hat under the hair. I believe that this hat would date to the 1940s. It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear or soiling - the wire, however, has exited the grosgrain at the back edge, but this is very minor and can be corrected either by stitching over it or trying to reinsert the wire.
This is a very sophisticated hat - gorgeous form, sure to be noticed!
