This is a wonderful western cowboy style hat made by Stetson of Canada. The last drop liner (cowboy pictured giving water to his horse) was in use from the late 1970s into the early 90s, so this hat most likely dates to the 1980s. The hat is marked as 5X - this denotes a higher beaver fur content, however, there’s no precise measure of how much beaver fur is actually used in a 5X hat. During the 1980s, however, the 5X was probably the third highest quality produced, with only 7X and 100X being of higher quality. Canadian Stetson made quality equivalent to American Stetson.
The hat is made in classic Western form in a black colour with slightly turned brim. The crown has a leather rope around its base and is decorated with a feather and a metal “Stetson” plaque at its side. The sweatband is silver stamped “Made in Canada Genuine Leather” as well as with “XXXXX” and “Hugh Scott Ltd Dominion Square Building Montreal”. The original owner’s initials of “JBM” are also stamped on the sweatband. The lining is also printed with “Stetson” and with the Stetson coat-of-arms.
It is sized as a 6 7/8 - it measures 21 3/8” around the sweat band and 7 1/2” by 6 3/8” across the opening. The brim measures 3 1/4” in width and the crown measures 6” in height at the side.
The hat is in very good condition with no wear or soiling - this hat looks to have seen little to no use and was well cared for over the years.
This is a nice quality Stetson western hat - great if it fits!
