This is a vintage early 60s coat made of a quality tweed wool that is woven in a checked pattern consisting of black and white diagonal stripes, ochre coloured horizontal striping, white and grey blended horizontal striping and tan coloured vertical striping. The coat has a wide collar and lapels, an eight button double-breasted closure, slant pockets with button down tabs next to them, as well as one at the centre back that could be used to accommodate a belt - no belt is supplied. It has raglan sleeves, cut full to the wrist. The coat has a flare to the hemline and a wide kick pleat at the back. The coat is fully lined in a maroon coloured satin fabric and there is a white muslin interlining. It has a below the knee length. I’ve posed it this way, but there is a loop on the right lapel and a button under the left collar, should you wish to wear the coat with a closed neck.
Label: That Young Leeds Look. In addition, the coat has a union label on it, with the ILGWU union logo on one side and the National Recovery Board logo of the Coat and Suit industry on the other. That particular ILGWU logo was used from 1963 until 1974 while the National Board was in place from 1938 until 1964, so it is easy to deduce that this coat dates to 1963-64. The National Recovery Board was a trade organization that came about in order to assure that garments were made in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards. The label assured consumers that the garment was made by workers who were not working excessive hours and who were being paid a fair hourly wage (info courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild).
Material: Wool tweed in a coarse weave.
