This is a vintage 60s era hat made by Mr John under his Mr John Jr label. It is made of black straw with a wide brim that dips at the left front. I’m unsure if this was made like this, but the brim could be made even by streaming it - a professional milliner would need to do this, if desired. It has a high crown that is decorated with a black velvet ribbon around its base. The opening measures 20 1/2" around, so probably would fit a small sized head unless you wear it sitting high on the head. It is in very good condition with no wear, tear or staining - this hat has been well cared for over the years.
Label: Mr John Jr. Mr John was John Harberger (1906-1993), one of the most important milliners of the 20th century. He began his career in 1926 and created many hats for the movies, notably for Gone With The Wind. The Mr John label was started in 1948 and the company was closed during the 1970s. Mr John's hats were known for their flattering form and innovative construction rather than for elaborate decoration. (info courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild).
