This is a vintage smoking jacket or short dressing gown/robe made in orangey red, or reddish orange, satiny fabric with a contrasting matte motif arranged in a plaid pattern. It has solid black satin lapels, cuffs and pocket trim. It has an applied pocket on the left chest and on either side, and a matching black satin fabric sash belt. The sleeves have turned cuffs. The jacket has a shawl collar and is fully lined in black satin.
Age: 1950s, possibly earlier. There is no label, but the pattern has an art deco feel to it, so maybe 1940s, difficult to say for sure, but certainly no later than the 50s.
Material: probably acetate, but possibly viscose rayon
Sizing: No size is indicated, and although it should fit a mens’ extra large, please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 17 1/2” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 24” long
Sleeve Inseam: 18” long
Chest: 50”, taken under the arms with a normal overlap
Waist: 50” around, but meant to be cinched with the sash belt
Overall length: 36"
Condition: It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odors - the only issue is that the stiffener interlining used to stiffen the lapels is a little “crunchy”. This doesn’t affect the look of the piece whatsoever - it would benefit from a professional pressing/cleaning. Otherwise, this piece doesn’t look to have seen much use and was well stored over the years.
Hard to find vintage smoking jackets like this in larger sizes - great colour, wonderful lounging piece!
