This is a beautifully tailored vintage suit, dated 1955, consisting of a jacket and two pairs of pants. The suit is made in a striking tone of blue herringbone patterned wool - this is a tone of blue that we might see in a 50s suit but not in later suits, it is quite special. The shoulders of the jacket are heavily padded and the notched lapels are a medium narrow width and elongated. The jacket has a two button closure and four buttons at the end of each sleeve. There is a jetted pocket at either side and a pocket at the left breast. The jacket is half lined in striped blue satin rayon fabric. It has two interior pockets. The pants are pleated and have a metal zipper fly. There are side pockets and back pockets as well as interior buttons should you want to use suspenders. The legs have cuffs. The suit is hand tailored - excellent quality.
Label: Clothes by Daniels and Caruso Montreal
Tailor’s label: Daniels & Daniels Inc. Jack Caruso, Associate. Clothiers for Gentlemen 537A St. Catherine St. W. Montreal. I have obliterated the gentleman’s name for privacy’s sake, but it is dated April 26th/55.
Color: Beautiful tone of blue - vibrant but not
Material: Wool in a worsted herringbone weave. It is a medium weight fabric, and having been bought in the spring, probably was meant for summer ear. They don’t make fabric of this quality any longer and haven’t for some time. Falls beautifully due to weight and quality.
Sizing: No size is indicated, as it was custom tailored, but this should fit a medium size, probably a size 36 with a 31” or 28” waist. Please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior (please take the thickness of the wool into consideration):
Shoulders: 17 1/2” across shoulder seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 24” from shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17” long
Chest: 40” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 35” around
Overall length: 30", measured flat
Waist: 1st pair: 31”, interior measurement 2nd pair: 28”
Leg Inseam: 1st pair: 29”, 2nd pair: 28 1/2” long
Overall length: 1st pair: 42”, 2nd pair: 41"
Condition: This suit is in very good condition with the exception of a pinhead sized hole in the upper left sleeve - fairly minor and could be invisibly mended for about $50 to $60. Otherwise, no wear, tear, stains or odours. This suit looks like it saw little use and was very well kept over the years.
This is a wonderful mid-1950s men's suit - they really knew how to make a sharp suit during the 50s. Sold at a price that allows for the mending - worth the price of the pants alone!
