This is a vintage 1950s, maybe 1940s, men’s fedora hat, made by French hatmaker Mossant and sold by Sools of Paris. Mossant was an important French company, founded in 1833 and reaching its height of production during the 1920s, until, in 1929, its factory was destroyed by fire. They continued in business, but gradually decreased hat manufacture, changing to clothing during the 1950s, and eventually closing in 1985. I’ve been unable to find much about Sools other than some old ads online, and some other small mention of them, but they appear to have been active from the late 19th century into the 1950s. The hat is made of an excellent quality fur felt in a charcoal grey colour. The interior top is gold stamped “Sools 5 Rue du Havre 22 Av Victor-Hugo Paris 12 Maisons à Paris” along with a Royal coat-of-arms. The sweatband is gold stamped “Sools Maitre Chapelier Paris” as well as with “Mossant”, a star and the original owner’s initials “PK”.
Size: 7 1/8 (medium). There is no size label, but the opening measures 22 1/4” around the sweatband, and 6 1/2” by 7 7/8” across the opening.
Condition: It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear or staining - there is no liner in the hat, but there never was.
This is a great looking 50s era fur felt fedora by a quality French hatmaker - wonderful addition to a collection!
