Vintage 1950s Harris Tweed Mens Overcoat Size XL Coat

This is a vintage men’s overcoat made of Harris Tweed cloth.  I believe that the coat dates to the 1950s as the ACWA (Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America) union label appears to be the one used from 1949 to 1962.  The ACWA label used subsequently has a ® at the lower left - difficult to know for sure as the label is sewn in a little high, but even the style of the coat dates it to as an earlier piece as does the Harris Tweed label utilized.  The coat has high set medium width notched lapels, raglan style sleeves, a four button front plus a smaller button at the neck, a 16”’ kick vent at the back and a slash pocket at either side.  There is a button down belt on either cuff.  It is half lined - upper back, sleeves and sides, only the lower back and sides are unlined. There is one pocket built into the interior fabric.

Label: Harris Tweed Handwoven Pure Scottish Wool with the Orb logo - “Dyed, Spun and Finished in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland To Certify Cloth Only Label Attached By License From Harris Tweed Association Ltd. “ with the unique serial number of 65880 stamped on it. The official definition of Harris Tweed as set in British law is:

“Harris Tweed means a tweed which has been hand woven by the islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, finished in the islands of Harris, Lewis, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra and their several purtenances (The Outer Hebrides) and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides.“ (courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild)

Color: Tones of grey and black

Sizing: No size is indicated, but it should fit an extra large size, probably a 46 - in any case, please rely on the following measurements for fit:

Shoulders and sleeves: 32” long

Sleeve Inseam: 15 1/2” long

Chest: 50”, taken under the arms

Waist: 52”

Hips:  54”

Overall length: 47”, measured flat

Condition: It is in very good condition with the exception of a tiny hole in the weave on the left sleeve near the cuff belt, very minor (see last close-up photo) - this just needs a few stitches.  Also, the lining is detached at the right cuff, but this is easily repaired, again, with a few stitches.  Finally, the lining is faded at the centre back.  Otherwise, this coat looks like it saw little use and was well stored over the years.

Harris Tweed overcoats are not often seen - classic and will last a lifetime if well cared for as Harris Tweed is a very robust fabric.....super coat.....
