This is a wonderful men’s overcoat dating to the 1940s. The coat is made in a classic 40s style with medium width peaked lapels and a six button double breasted front. It has a flapped pocket at either side. The exterior is made of a heavy weight wool and the interior is fully lined in black satin fabric. The coat has a 19 1/2” single back vent/kick pleat. The sleeves have two buttons t the cuffs.
Label: None. Most likely tailor made, or the labels have been removed
Sizing: There is no size tag but this should fit a large size, probably about a US size 44 - my observation is that normally sizes are 4” less than chest circumference, but the wool is quite thick on this coat and the style is different from modern coats, so that rule of thumb may not hold in this case. Please note the following measurements for fit, taking the cut and thickness of the fabric into account as well as the length of the sleeves and the overall length of the coat:
Shoulders: 20” from shoulder seam to shoulder seam
Sleeves: 25” from the shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17”
Chest: 48” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 48” around
Hips: 54” around
Length: 49”, measured flat
Condition: It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, stains or odours - the only defects that I can see is a small hole at the bottom front right of the coat and a wear spot at the edge of the left sleeve cuff, quite minor and shouldn’t bother anyone very much, and the lining needs stitching at the left armpit seam, easy repair. Otherwise, the nappe is intact and the lining is clean. This coat looks to have seen little use and has been very well cared for and stored over the last 70 years.
This is a very nice quality coat in very nice condition, especially considering its age - great piece if you need to recreate mens fashion as it was in the 1940s!
