This is a wonderful early fedora men’s hat featuring some aspects of a homburg. It was made by D.F. Morgan Limited of 4821 Rouen St. in Montreal. I haven’t been able to find out much about this company, other than it appears to have been in business during the 1920s and closed about 1953 or 1954. I’m dating it as 1930s although it may be from the 1920s - it is difficult to date precisely but I’m fairly certain that it is no later than the 30s. The edge of the hat is turned like a homburg and the brim is turned up, although you could turn the front down if desired. The crown is quite high and full with a wide centre crease - you can pinch the sides if you would like as the fur felt is quite pliable, yet substantial and soft. The hat is made in a navy blue colour and the crown is wrapped in a slightly lighter blue grosgrain ribbon with bow at the left. The lining is printed with “Non Plus Ultra Morgan Imperial Made by D.F. Morgan Limited Montreal Toronto Vancouver Halfiax”. The sweatband is similarly gold stamped. There is an inventory tag under the sweatband with a re-order code on it. It is unsized but should fit a medium size, probably a 7 or snugly on a size 7 1/8 head. It measures 21 3/4” around the sweat band and 7 5/8” by 6 3/8” across the opening. The brim measures 2 3/4” in width and the crown measures 4 3/4” in height. The hat is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, fading, staining or odor - clean and ready to wear with a lint brushing. This is a great looking hat - I think that examples by this maker are hard to come by, but they were obviously a quality maker, as expressed by their motto “Non Plus Ultra”, which means “no more beyond”, or “none better”…..nice acquisition for the hat collector!
