This is a wonderful vintage tennis uniform dress or playsuit - not exactly a dress as it has a skort bottom. The piece dates either to the late 1930s or possibly the early 40s. It does up with a brass zipper at the front skirt and with three white plastic buttons up the bodice. There are loops around the waist and it has a matching belt. It has an open neckline in a V shape with a shirt-type collar that is fairly wide and pointy. It is made of a cream white, almost pale yellow, faille fabric, probably a wood rayon. The skirt is pleated and cut wide to provide ease of movement. The piece is unlined.
Label: no label, but definitely manufactured
Sizing: No size is indicated, but please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 20” across, including the cap sleeves
Bust: 36” around
Waist: 26” around
Hips: 36” around
Overall length: 32”, measured flat
Condition: It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear or tear, stains or odours - there is a bit of stitch unraveling at the back right sleeve (see last close-up photo), very minor.
These old tennis uniforms are becoming very difficult to come by - this is a very nice example!
