This is a beautiful example of a 1910s-1920s era straw boater hat, an important mens fashion accent during the early 20th century. This hat was sold by a Maine retailer or manufacturer as the interior lining reads “Select Quality Snyder’s 8 Monument Square Portland Maine - Snyder Says Use Your Head When You Buy a Hat”. This boater is beautifully made with a triple layer of straw, which gives the brim a rigid thickness, and a finer weave of straw around the head opening. It has a leather sweatband and a woven silk lining. The crown is wrapped at the base with a black grosgrain ribbon and bow. The paper tag reads size 7 and there is a size 7 under the sweatband behind the netting as well as the remnant of a Union label. I’ve owned this hat for about 35 years and its been in storage ever since I acquired it. It is in amazing condition for one of these straw boaters - authentic examples usually were used at some point over the last many years, so are often chipped or soiled. This hat has survived completely intact with no visible signs of use. The interior dimensions of the opening are 6 1/2” by 8” and the sweatband measures 22” around.
