Richly moulded with flowing Art Nouveau-inspired ornament, the design features tall iris flowers running down one side while the opposite corner depicts a picturesque rural landscape complete with a windmill, farmhouse and distant hills. The central opening is surrounded by an elegant rococo-style cartouche, creating a striking combination of Victorian and emerging Art Nouveau influences. The photograph slips into a pocket at the back of the frame and is under glass.

The original cabinet card photograph was taken by N. C. Lalonde & Son, photographers at the corner of Bleury and St. Catherine Streets in Montreal. The charming portrait captures a young girl standing beside an ornate wicker chair while cradling a doll in her right arm. Details such as her lace-trimmed dress, necklace and polished button boots make this an appealing period image.

The reverse retains the original photographer's decorative printed advertisement, further enhancing both the authenticity and display value of the piece.

The frame measures approximately 7 1/4 inches by 9 1/2 inches.

The frame remains in very good condition. The embossed celluloid displays only minor age-related wear and could benefit from a gentle additional cleaning if desired, although it presents very attractively as it is. There are a few small areas of loss to the celluloid, visible in the photographs, but these are relatively minor considering its age. The original easel support on the reverse is no longer present, so the frame is best displayed by hanging or by using a separate stand. The cabinet card itself shows expected age toning and light wear consistent with its age.

A delightful decorative survivor from the Victorian era, combining an attractive embossed frame with an original Montreal studio portrait, making it equally appealing to collectors of antique photography, Victorian décor, celluloid objects or childhood memorabilia.

Measurements:

Height: 9 1/2 inches

Width: 7 1/4 inches

https://www.poppysvintageclothing.com/products/antique-victorian-celluloid-picture-frame-with-cabinet-card-photograph-of-girl-holding-doll-c-1900
