Antique Harvard University Mens Morning Coat Cambridge Tailor Frock Coat Size M
Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is an antique men’s morning coat or what some may refer to as a cutaway frock coat, dating to, I believe, either the late 1910s or early 1920s, because of the more pronounced peak lapel. The label on the coat reads “William’s Formal Wear Outfitters Harvard Square - Cambridge”, so this probably was worn by someone associated with Harvard University. The manufacturer’s label on the inside interior pocket reads “Linett Formal Clothing Co., Inc. N.Y. Manufacturers Tuxedos”. It is made of an excellent quality black wool that is edged in silk piping along the lapels and opening, trimming the chest pocket and delineating, the cuffs and the back vent. It has padded shoulders, a wide peak lapel, a front cutaway, and a pleated 26” back vent. It has a single button closure, and two buttons at the back. The original cuff buttons had been covered in woven silk, but the remaining originals have lost their silk covering, probably due to a dry cleaner who didn’t remove the buttons prior to cleaning. The front button and the two back buttons have been replaced with plastic buttons. The interior is lined in a black fabric, probably natural rayon. There is a three point hankie in the chest pocket provided by the dry cleaner, probably circa 1950s.
Sizing: This should fit a small to medium size, perhaps a modern size 36/38. Please rely on the following measurements for fit, comparing them to another jacket that you may own or your body measurements, allowing some room for fit:
Shoulders: 18 1/2” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 24 1/2” long
Sleeve Inseam: 18” long
Chest: 40” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 34” around
Hips 38” around
Overall length: 44“ long, measured flat at the centre back
Condition: It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, holes, nibbles, stains or odours. The only defects are some open seams to the lining at the armpit and the cross seam, very minor and easily stitched by anyone with any competence. In addition, one button at the left cuff is missing and there are the aforementioned damaged buttons and replacement buttons - you could replace all of the buttons with something more appropriate, if desired. Otherwise, this morning coat has been very well cared for over the last 100 or so years.
This is an exceptional morning coat by a New York manufacturer, sold in Harvard Square - wonderful piece if it fits!
