This is an antique biscuit barrel that is made of painted porcelain with a silverplated rim, cover and handle. The painted scene is extremely charming - a group of Victorian era people, all on the same toboggan, descending a hill. The silverplated rim is stamped on its side with “E.P.N.S.” and with “S&B”. The scene definitely has an element of hand painting, but it could be that some of the painting was done over a stencil - I’m not sure, but please view the close-up photos. In any case, this is a prototypical Canadian winter sports scene and a wonderful display piece! It was probably made in Britain for the Canadian market. It measures 6” in height to the top of the rim and 10 3/4” to the top of the handle when it is in the upright position. It has a diameter of about 6” at its widest and weighs 1 lb and 9 oz. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or wear except for a small ding to the silverplate on the rim (see close-up photo). This is a rare piece featuring a lovely winter scene - great display piece for the ski lodge!
