Antique Bicorne Hat Box Military or Naval Tin Carrying Case
Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is an antique box or case for a military or naval tricorne hat. I acquired this about 10 years ago from the estate of a very serious collector, where most items were either from the earlier 19th century or 18th century. This piece is made of thick tin and constructed by welding a number of pieces together. The latch, hinge and the small handle at the top are all welded on. The exterior appears to have an anodized finish to it. It measures 19 1/2” interior dimension at the bottom by 7 1/8” in height, interior dimension and has an inside depth of about 3”. It weighs 2 1/2 lbs. It is in very good condition with the exception of a few small dings and some light surface rust corrosion mostly on the interior.
The bicorne hat was widely adopted during the 1790s by both European and American military and naval officers and continued to be used during the Napoleonic period. It continued to be used as a formal dress item through most of the 19th century. I’m unsure of the age of this particular case, but due to its construction, I would think that it dates to the first half of the 19th century.
This is a rare item, hard to find in this condition, alone without a hat - great piece if you have a hat that will fit or just an interesting conversational display piece!
