This is a wonderful vintage 1970s Alexandre House of Fine Tailoring men's mod styled coat made in a glen plaid checked wool tweed. Alexandre is located at 39 Savile Row and has a history stretching back to 1894. The piece is made in a double breasted trench style - it has exaggerated “Napoleonic” lapels that can be buttoned up to cover the neckline, either to the right or left. The shoulders have belted epaulets, the sleeves have adjustable belts at the cuff and the waist cinches with a matching belt. It has a button down flapped patch pocket built onto either side - the flaps are cutaway styled. It has a long, three button kick pleat at the back. The coat is fully lined in gray satin fabric.
Age: early 1970s
Label: Alexandre House for Fine Tailoring Showerproofed. Alexandre now holds a Royal Warrant.
Color: Overall gray appearance with red striping - the tweed is made up of white, gray, black and red thread.
Material: Excellent quality wool tweed
Sizing: Size 40 regular is indicated, but please rely on the following measurements for fit (compare the measurements to those of a similar coat that you might own and consider leaving space for a jacket):
Shoulders: 19” across from one shoulder/sleeve seam to the other
Sleeves: 26 1/2” long from the epaulets
Sleeve Inseam: 16” long
Chest: 44” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 42” around, but meant to be cinched with the belt
Overall length: 40", measured flat
Condition: It is in excellent condition, the only defect being a bit of surface rust to the buckle at the right cuff. Otherwise, no wear, staining or other visible defect.
This is an exceptional coat – super quality fabric, great vintage 70s mod look by a London tailor, obviously influenced by Carnaby Street fashion design that was so hot at the time….
