This is a wonderful vintage Cowichan style sweater dating to the 1950s, sometimes called a "curling" sweater in Canada. It is a variation of a Mary Maxim pattern, very similar, with slight differences from the pattern that one usually sees. The sweater features a sailboats and seagulls on its front and back, as well as anchors at the top of the back and the top of the shoulders and steering wheels on the sleeves. The sweater is fully lined in black corduroy fabric and closes with a metal zipper down the front. There is a shallow pocket built into the bottom of either side at the front.
Label: Hand Knit - no label
Color: Navy blue, yellow and white
Sizing: Large, probably a size 42 as my husband who wears a size 44 found it just a bit snug, but please note the following measurements for fit, taking the thickness of the wool into account and the constraint of the lining (please measure your body, whose measurements should be slightly smaller than those provided, or measure another sweater similar to this one that you might have):
Shoulders: 18" across, estimated due to the raglan cut of the sleeve
Sleeves: 26" from the estimated shoulder
Sleeve Inseam: 18" long
Chest: 48" around, taken under the arms
Waist: 46" around
Overall length: 29", measured flat
It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear or soiling - this really looks to have seen very little use and was well stored over the years.
This is a great looking 50s sweater.....fun retro pattern in an attractive color combination.....
