Vintage 1970s white chiffon evening caftan with hand-beaded rhinestone yoke, long draped sleeves and floor-length side panels

Vintage 1970s Hand Beaded White Chiffon Evening Caftan – Rhinestone Hostess Gown

$175.00

This is a vintage 1970s evening caftan made from sheer white rayon chiffon, featuring an elaborately embellished neckline and shoulder yoke, flowing draped sleeves and a dramatic floor-length silhouette with extended side panels.

The caftan is constructed from a broad, square-cut expanse of lightweight chiffon that falls loosely from the shoulders, creating a flowing, almost cape-like effect through the sleeves and sides. The garment is considerably longer at the sides than at the centre front and back, producing deep, cascading points of fabric that extend towards the floor.

The neckline is high and rounded, with a short standing band decorated with rows of topaz-coloured, clear and metallic beads. A zipper at the upper centre back provides the closure.

The most distinctive feature is the heavily embellished yoke extending across the shoulders and upper chest, continuing around the back. The decoration is arranged in an elaborate geometric pattern with a pointed central panel extending down the front.

Large, round, faceted clear rhinestones are surrounded by closely spaced topaz glass bugle beads, smaller clear beads and metallic gold-toned beads. Delicate floral motifs in pale lavender and pink add further detail, while small beaded tassels hang from the pointed front panel and at either side.

The long sleeves are formed by the draped construction of the caftan rather than conventional fitted sleeves. They fall loosely from the shoulders and are gathered into narrow cuffs decorated with parallel rows of topaz-coloured, clear and metallic beads, together with larger faceted rhinestones.

Two internal fabric ties are attached at either side of the front, allowing the garment to be drawn in and adjusted around the body while retaining the loose, flowing outer silhouette.

The chiffon is very fine, lightweight and translucent, with a soft drape. The garment would require an appropriate slip or underdress for wear.

There are no maker's or fabric-content labels. The garment may have been custom or seamstress-made, although this cannot be confirmed.
