Vintage 1960s Grover's Montréal men's charcoal grey wool cashmere overcoat, front view

Vintage 1960s Men's Wool Cashmere Overcoat – Grover's Montréal Velcuna English Fabric

$195.00

This is a vintage 1960s men's overcoat by Grover's of Montréal, tailored from Velcuna wool and cashmere fabric loomed in England. The coat features classic mid-century styling, with a long, straight silhouette and finely textured charcoal grey fabric.

The coat is made from a substantial wool and cashmere blend with a closely woven, subtly patterned surface. The fabric has a fine, understated miniature check, with slightly contrasting grey and black threads that give it depth and visual interest. Its overall appearance is dark charcoal grey.

The single-breasted coat features high-set, medium-width notched lapels, a three-button front fastening and structured, naturally shaped shoulders. There is a buttonhole in the left lapel and two generously sized lower pockets with rectangular flaps. The long sleeves are finished with distinctive buttoned half-belt tabs at the cuffs.

The back is simply tailored, with a centre seam and a 15" centre-back vent extending upward from the hem. The coat has a relatively straight cut through the body, widening slightly toward the hem.

The interior is partially lined in dark grey satin-finish fabric, with the upper back, shoulders and sleeves lined, while the lower back reveals the reverse of the wool and cashmere cloth. The centre-back vent is also lined.

The coat retains its original Grover's Montréal label, bearing the wording Hand-Shaped Quality, together with the original Velcuna Wool & Cashmere – Loomed in England fabric label. The latter identifies the cloth as an English wool and cashmere blend, although the precise percentages are not indicated. The coat also retains an Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA) union label of a type used between 1962 and 1976.

The combination of the three-button front, high-set lapels, straight silhouette and buttoned sleeve tabs is consistent with men's overcoat fashions of the 1960s.

This is a substantial, well-tailored overcoat made from tightly woven English wool and cashmere cloth, with the weight, texture and traditional construction characteristic of quality mid-century outerwear.
