Vintage 1956 1957 Phantom Seamed Nylon Stockings Brown NOS

This is a pair of vintage circa 1956–1957 Phantom seamed nylon stockings, made in Canada by National Hosiery Mills Limited of Hamilton, Ontario.

The stockings are marked at the upper welt:

“Phantom
Better Wearing
Dress Sheer
‘Phanto-Sheer Stretch’
Average”

These are seamed stretch nylon stockings, marketed by Phantom as “Phanto-Sheer Stretch.” They have traditional back seams, reinforced heels and toes, and wide reinforced upper welts. The stretch construction provided a more adaptable fit while retaining the classic seamed stocking design.

The Phanto-Sheer Stretch line was being advertised in Canada in 1956. These stockings therefore date to approximately 1956–1957, during the final years of production at National Hosiery Mills' Phantom hosiery plant in Hamilton, which ceased production in 1957.

The stockings come in an original black Phantom box featuring the distinctive woman's face incorporated into the design. The original spiderweb-printed Phantom Sanitized tissue paper is also present.

The box is marked:

“Phantom 46
Rosebeige
Average”

Although the box identifies the colour as Rosebeige, the stockings themselves appear to be a medium brown or taupe-brown, rather than the pinkish beige seen in Phantom's Rosebeige stockings. It is possible that the stockings and box were mismatched at some point, so the colour of the stockings is being described according to their actual appearance.

The side of the box is marked:

Medium brown/taupe-brown. The original box is marked Rosebeige, but the stockings themselves appear considerably browner.

Condition:
The stockings are unused and in excellent condition. The original box shows minor age and storage wear, but displays very well as is. The original Phantom spiderweb-printed tissue paper is present.

A particularly nice example of 1950s Canadian seamed hosiery, dating from the final years of Phantom stocking production in Hamilton and retaining its attractive original period packaging.
