This is a vintage burgundy velvet evening coat, most likely dating to the 1950s, possibly early 1960s. Beautifully designed with a generous, flowing silhouette and a dramatic convertible collar, the coat has the luxurious appearance of formal evening outerwear from the period.
The coat is fashioned in rich, deep burgundy or wine-coloured velvet with a soft, lustrous pile, most likely cotton velvet. It has a loose, flared silhouette with raglan-style sleeves that provide a relaxed fit through the shoulders and body, allowing it to be worn comfortably over evening dresses and formal gowns.
The most distinctive feature is the large, sculptural collar, which can be arranged in different ways. Worn down, it forms a broad, draped shawl-style collar, secured at the neckline with a single decorative button in a coordinating red tone. Turned upward, the collar creates a dramatic, high, almost hood-like surround to the face.
The coat fastens with just one button at the neckline, with the remainder of the front left to hang freely, creating an elegant, flowing effect. This open-front construction is particularly well suited to an evening or opera coat.
The interior is fully lined in beautiful rust-red satin, providing a striking contrast to the deep burgundy velvet. The sleeves are generously cut, and the hemline is finished with several rows of decorative stitching.
