Antique Victorian Opal Glass Paste Rhinestone Bar Brooch Blue Pink Fire c1890

This is an antique Victorian bar brooch, probably dating to the late 19th or very early 20th century, featuring three opalescent blue glass cabochons surrounded by clear paste rhinestones.
The brooch has a symmetrical design centred on a round, domed imitation opal glass stone displaying a soft milky blue colour with pinkish and orange flashes. Two elongated, pointed oval cabochons of matching glass extend horizontally from either side.
The central stone is surrounded by ten round, faceted clear paste stones, each individually mounted in a pronged setting. The paste stones have developed some darkening and discolouration with age, contrasting with the soft blue opalescence of the glass.
The stones are mounted in an aged brass-coloured metal setting with decorative claw-like prongs. The reverse has an openwork construction with an old-fashioned pin stem and simple hand-soldered hook catch, consistent with late Victorian and Edwardian jewellery.
The glass resembles antique imitation opal glass, sometimes called fire opal glass, made to reproduce the milky appearance and coloured flashes of natural opals.
The brooch is unsigned. It is probably of European manufacture, possibly Bohemian (Gablonz), although its precise origin is unknown.

An attractive small antique brooch combining imitation opal glass with traditional Victorian-style paste stone settings. Its distinctive colouring and aged appearance give it considerable antique character.
