Antique 19th Century German Grödnertal Wooden Peg Doll Dutch Doll Original Silk Clothing

$145.00

This is a charming antique German Grödnertal wooden peg doll, also known as a Dutch doll or Grödner Gliederpuppe, most likely dating to the mid to late 19th century, although an earlier date is possible.

These traditional wooden dolls originated in the Grödnertal (Val Gardena) region of the Tyrol, an area renowned for its woodcarving industry. Produced in various sizes, they were widely exported throughout Europe and became particularly popular in England, where they were commonly known as Dutch dolls.

This small example measures just 4 inches tall and is fashioned entirely of wood, with a carved and hand-painted head, a narrow torso and elongated, jointed wooden arms and legs. The limbs are attached using the traditional peg-and-slot construction characteristic of Grödnertal dolls.

The doll has a particularly appealing hand-painted face, with fine dark eyebrows, small black eyes, pronounced rosy red cheeks and a tiny mouth. The black painted hair is arranged close to the head, with a central parting and smooth, rounded appearance. The facial features have a slightly whimsical quality.

What makes this example particularly desirable is its original antique costume, which has survived in very nice condition.

The doll wears a cream-coloured silk blouse with a broad, gathered collar and short, puffed sleeves, finished with gathered cuffs. Over the blouse is a fitted black velvet bodice or vest, which contrasts with the pale silk.

The costume is completed by a full, bright red silk skirt, gathered at the waist and falling in generous folds to create a wide silhouette. The silk has a sheen, and the red contrasts with the black velvet and cream-coloured blouse.

The skirt can be lifted to reveal the doll's wooden legs, which retain traces of their original painted finish.

The combination of the puffed-sleeve blouse, fitted velvet bodice and full silk skirt gives the doll the appearance of a traditional European folk costume. The survival of these delicate garments adds considerably to its character and appeal.

Measurements:

Overall height: 4"

Condition: Very good condition, showing age-related wear consistent with its considerable age. The painted wooden face has surface wear and some black marking, while the black painted hair also shows some wear. The wooden arms and legs retain their original articulated construction.

The antique clothing is very well preserved overall. Please examine the photographs carefully for further details of the condition.

An example of 19th-century German Grödnertal wooden doll-making, retaining its original silk and velvet costume. An interesting addition to a collection of antique dolls, early wooden toys, Victorian textiles, miniature folk costumes or European folk art.
