Original December 1895 Christmas issue of The Ladies' Home Journal, published by The Curtis Publishing Company of Philadelphia.
This is Vol. XIII, No. 1, dated December 1895. It is a large-format magazine and provides an look at American women's fashion, advertising, literature, domestic life and consumer culture at the end of the 19th century.
Of particular interest is "Maidie's Dance," with drawings by Kate Greenaway and verses by Laura E. Richards. The issue also includes the beginning of Rudyard Kipling's "William the Conqueror," with illustrations by W. L. Taylor.
Fashion content includes illustrated articles on gowns for special occasions, evening bonnets and wraps, cloaks, capes and other late Victorian women's fashions.
The magazine contains numerous advertisements throughout, many illustrated, providing an excellent record of products, fashions and everyday life in 1895. Advertisements shown include Pears' Soap (back cover), Kayser gloves, R&G corsets, Columbia bicycles, Carson Pirie Scott & Co., Stevens cloaks, Lewis Union Suits and many others. There is also an advertisement announcing the forthcoming serial publication of J. M. Barrie's Sentimental Tommy.
Other contents include Christmas gift suggestions, recipes and Christmas puddings, fiction, household articles and advice.
The attractive colour Christmas cover depicts a formal holiday gathering and is marked "Christmas 1895." The rear cover has a full-page colour Pears' Soap advertisement.

Measurements: 11 1/4" × 16 3/8" (28.6 × 41.6 cm).
Condition: Good antique condition for a magazine dating from 1895. The covers show age-related wear, including edge wear, small tears and losses along the upper edge, some creasing and discolouration/spotting. There is “Kate Greenaway Illust.” written lightly in pencil at the upper right of the front cover. Interior pages show occasional edge tears and age-related wear but are generally clean and present well. Please examine the photographs for condition.
An excellent original source for someone who appreciates Victorian fashion, advertising, women's history, illustration and late 19th-century American social history.
