1950s Atomic Table Lamp with Fiberglass Shade & Tripod Base

Dating to the 1950s, this atomic-era table lamp combines a black glazed ceramic body, brass-coloured metal fittings, splayed tripod feet and its original period fibreglass shade. The tall tapered ceramic body has vertical ribbing with a mottled grey decoration, while the neck is finished with an unusual decorative looped-wire collar.

The tripod base, elongated ceramic form and metal detailing are characteristic of lighting from the 1950s atomic and early Mid-Century Modern period.

The original period shade is fibreglass and is finished in red with an abstract spray-like gold and white decoration. The upper and lower edges are finished with dark whipstitch lacing. The shade is fitted with a wire bulb clip and attaches directly to the light bulb rather than to a harp.

The brass-coloured socket has a black ball-ended switch. The switch provides two brightness settings before returning to the off position.

Height excluding socket: 13 1/4 inches
Shade top diameter: 8 1/2 inches
Shade bottom diameter: 12 inches

The lamp is in very good condition. There is age-related patina and surface wear to the metal components, and the shade has a couple of minor kinks. The ceramic body is in very good condition. Please examine the photographs closely, as they form an important part of the condition description.

The lamp is shown illuminated in one photograph to demonstrate the appearance of the fibreglass shade when lit.

This is a wonderful example of an atomic era lamp - great in a mid-century decor!
