This is a large vintage Italian silk blend shawl featuring an elaborate woven jacquard design in black and muted antique gold, finished with long black fringe along all four sides. Probably dating to the 1980s or 1990s, the shawl has a generous, nearly square shape that allows it to be worn in several different ways.

The fabric features an intricate combination of floral and geometric motifs arranged within an irregular framework of intersecting diagonal bands. Large floral bouquets, leafy branches and blossoms are interspersed with zigzag patterns, abstract animal-print-like markings and smaller geometric designs.

The pattern is woven into the fabric rather than printed, with contrasting weave structures creating subtle variations in texture and lustre. The muted gold-toned threads stand out against the black background, while the interplay of the different motifs gives the shawl an almost tapestry-like appearance.

The shawl is finished with a generous 6 1/2" long black fringe on all four sides, adding considerable movement and drape. Its dimensions make it suitable for wearing over the shoulders as a wrap, draping over a coat or folding diagonally into a large triangular shawl.

The original fabric label identifies the composition as 50% Seta (silk) and 50% Acetato (acetate). The reverse of the label confirms that the shawl was made in Italy and specifies dry cleaning only.
