Vintage Chelsea Pottery Cat Tile Trivet Joyce Morgan Design England c. Late 1960s–1970s

$85.00

This is a wonderfully whimsical vintage ceramic cat tile or trivet made by Chelsea Pottery of London, England, featuring one of the celebrated cat designs by Joyce Morgan, one of the principal figures behind the pottery.

Joyce Morgan was particularly known for her wonderfully eccentric cats, which became one of Chelsea Pottery's most iconic and recognizable designs. This delightful example depicts a striped cat with enormous yellow eyes, a broad toothy grin and oversized paws, rendered in warm shades of ochre, golden yellow, brown and cream, with touches of pale blue and red. The cat's mischievous expression and exaggerated features give it tremendous personality and perfectly capture the quirky humour for which these Chelsea Pottery cats became known.

Joyce Morgan played an important role in the history of Chelsea Pottery. She had worked with founders David and Mary Rawnsley and followed them when the pottery relocated to Radnor Walk in Chelsea in 1959. After approximately seven years involved in a pottery venture in Nassau, Bahamas, she returned to Radnor Walk, apparently around 1966 or 1967. Chelsea Pottery was subsequently run by Joyce Morgan and Brian Hubbard and became known for its distinctive handmade ceramics and commissions for prominent clients.

Given this chronology, I believe that this particular tile most likely dates to the late 1960s or 1970s.

The lower left corner bears a hand-applied artist's mark or monogram that I believe belongs to Joyce Morgan. The reverse is clearly stamped:

CHELSEA POTTERY
RADNOR WALK
LONDON, S.W.3
ENGLAND

The tile measures 6 inches square. Its substantial ceramic construction and deeply grooved, unglazed reverse suggest that it was produced as a decorative tile, although a piece of this size and form could certainly also have been used as a trivet.

The tile is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, chips or cracks.

A wonderfully characterful example of British studio pottery featuring one of Chelsea Pottery's most iconic designs, created by Joyce Morgan and instantly recognizable for its humour, eccentricity and unmistakable feline personality.
