Vintage 1970s Moroccan Djellaba Copper Satin Hooded Caftan Blue Space Age Starburst Motif
This is a vintage Moroccan djellaba, probably dating to the late 1960s or 1970s, made from a lustrous coppery rust-orange satin fabric with contrasting electric-blue woven geometric motifs and decorative embroidery.
The garment features the traditional long, straight-cut silhouette of a Moroccan djellaba, with full-length sleeves and a pointed hood. It has no front opening and slips over the head. The fabric has a smooth, reflective surface that changes in appearance with the light, ranging from bright copper-orange to a deeper reddish rust.
One of the most unusual features is the repeated abstract design woven into the fabric. Each motif consists of an oval or ring-shaped centre surrounded by long, sharply pointed rays, resembling a stylized sunburst or even a space-age satellite. These blue and violet-toned designs are distributed across the front, back and sleeves, creating an unusual contrast with the traditional construction of the garment.
The V-shaped neckline is bordered with rust-coloured decorative needlework incorporating geometric embroidery in bright blue. This continues down the centre front in a broad vertical band featuring a repeated arrangement of diamonds, intersecting lines and star-shaped patterns. Narrow decorative stitching also finishes the shoulder seams, sleeve edges and centre-front seam.
The djellaba has a large, pointed hood that falls down the centre back when not in use. The hood is finished with matching decorative stitching and blue trim.
The combination of traditional Moroccan tailoring, embroidered geometric detailing and the unusual abstract fabric design gives this djellaba a distinctive appearance associated with the fashions of the late 1960s and 1970s.
