Vintage 1960s Psychedelic Print Jersey Shirtwaist Dress – Purple Green Pink – Belted
This is a vintage late 1960s day dress featuring a bold psychedelic print in vivid purple, emerald green, hot pink and red-orange, with swirling abstract shapes, curling tendrils and stylized floral motifs outlined in black and white.
The dress has a shirtwaist design with a rolled, notched collar, short sleeves and a button-front bodice. The front fastens with small, round buttons in a deep reddish colour.
The bodice is fitted through the waist, which is elasticized and further defined by a matching fabric-covered belt with a rectangular buckle. The skirt is gathered into the waist, creating fullness through the hips before falling to approximately knee length, depending on the wearer's height.
The print features large, flowing paisley-like scrolls and stylized floral elements arranged in an intricate, allover composition. The strong contrasts between the green, purple, pink and red-orange are characteristic of psychedelic textile designs of the late 1960s.
The dress is made from a fine, lightweight synthetic jersey knit with a smooth drape and some natural stretch. The precise fibre composition is unknown, although the fabric appears consistent with polyester or polyamide jersey.
