Vintage 1950s Phantom seamed nylon stockings three pairs

Vintage 1950s Phantom Seamed Nylon Stockings 3 Pairs NOS Canada

$75.00

This is a group of three pairs of vintage 1950s Phantom seamed nylon stockings, made in Canada by National Hosiery Mills Limited of Hamilton, Ontario.

All three pairs are unused and come together in an original black Phantom hosiery box with the distinctive woman's face incorporated into the design. The original spiderweb-printed Phantom Sanitized tissue paper is also present.

The stockings are shades of brown, although the original box is marked “Bud Green.” The box is therefore a mismatch and does not correspond to the colour of the stockings.

One pair is a somewhat darker brown and is clearly marked at the upper welt:

“Phantom Sanitized
Hint of a Seam
60 Gauge – 15 Denier
Better Wearing
Dress Sheer
9
Medium”

This pair is a fine 60-gauge, 15-denier dress sheer with traditional back seams, reinforced heels and toes, and attractive openwork detailing at the upper welts.

The other two pairs are a lighter, somewhat more yellowish shade of brown. They are similar period Phantom stockings but differ slightly in colour from the darker pair.

All three pairs are seamed nylon stockings, with the classic sheer leg, reinforced foot and heel construction and wide upper welts characteristic of quality mid-century hosiery.

The box is marked on the end:

“Phantom 272
Green Bud
9”

and elsewhere:

“Made in Canada by National Hosiery Mills Limited
Hamilton, Canada”

These stockings date to the 1950s and no later than 1957, when production at National Hosiery Mills' Phantom hosiery plant in Hamilton ceased.

Quantity:
3 pairs

Size:
The darker pair is marked size 9 Medium. The box is also marked size 9.

Colour:
Brown. One pair is a darker medium brown; the other two pairs are a lighter, more yellowish brown. The original box is marked Bud Green and is a mismatch.

Material:
Nylon

Condition:
The three pairs are unused. There is label glue residue to the upper welt of two stockings, as shown in the close-up photograph – the label would have denoted the height. The original box has considerable age and storage wear, including edge wear, tears, losses to the black covering and damage to the sides and corners. The original Phantom spiderweb-printed tissue paper is present and yellowed, with one having a blue stain and another having a rust-coloured stain – the stockings are untouched.

An interesting group of three pairs of 1950s Canadian seamed nylon stockings, retaining Phantom packaging.
