Art Deco 1920s Czech Peacock Eye Glass Bluebell Bead Necklace Saphiret Clasp

This is an Art Deco Czechoslovakian glass bead necklace, dating to most likely the 1920s, featuring unusual graduated bluebell-shaped glass beads and a saphiret glass clasp.

The necklace is composed of moulded glass beads shaped like small bluebells or bell flowers, graduating in size toward the centre. The beads have a striking Peacock Eye iridescent finish, displaying shifting shades of turquoise blue, teal, green, bronze and smoky brown. The mottled, lustrous colouration varies from bead to bead and gives the necklace wonderful depth and character. Small round green glass spacer beads separate the bluebell-shaped beads.

An especially interesting feature is the clasp. It consists of an oval faceted saphiret glass stone mounted in a brass setting. The stone displays the characteristic shifting brown, blue and mauve tones associated with saphiret glass.

The reverse of the clasp is impressed with a partially legible country-of-origin mark. It appears to read Czechoslovakia, although some of the lettering is indistinct. The mark, materials and construction are all consistent with Czechoslovakian jewellery of the Art Deco period.

The necklace appears to retain its old stringing, including knotted thread at the clasp, adding to its wonderfully untouched period character.

Measurement: 16 3/4" long when laid out straight.

The necklace is in very good condition. The original stringing is present, but should be treated carefully due to its inherent fragility. Please refer to the photographs for details of condition.
