antique-german-grodnertal-wooden-peg-doll-silk-dress
Antique 19th Century German Grödnertal Wooden Peg Doll Dutch Doll Silk Dress

This is an antique German Grödnertal wooden peg doll, also known as a Dutch doll or Grödner Gliederpuppe, believed to date to approximately 1830–1850, although a slightly later 19th-century date is possible.

These traditional wooden dolls originated in the Grödnertal (Val Gardena) region of the Tyrol, an area renowned for its woodcarving industry. Produced in various sizes, they were widely exported throughout Europe and became particularly popular in England, where they were commonly known as Dutch dolls.

The doll is fashioned entirely of wood, with a carved and hand-painted head, a narrow, tapered torso and elongated, jointed wooden arms and legs. The limbs are attached using the traditional peg-and-slot construction characteristic of Grödnertal dolls.

The oval-shaped head has a particularly appealing hand-painted face, featuring delicate black eyebrows and eyes, rosy pink cheeks and a small red mouth. The black painted hair is arranged close to the head, with a central parting and smooth, rounded appearance. The facial features retain much of their original painted detail, despite the considerable passage of time.

What makes this example particularly interesting is its elaborate antique silk costume, believed to be contemporary with the doll.

The doll wears a full skirt gathered at the waist and fashioned from fine, lightweight silk chiffon in a soft, faded green-toned colour. The skirt falls in generous folds from the waist, creating a wide, flowing silhouette, and is finished with a narrow gathered ruffle around the hem.

The upper body is decorated with an elaborate silk passementerie collar or bodice trimming, featuring intricately woven bands of cream-coloured silk with long, loose fringe. The decorative trimming is securely attached and forms an attractive contrast with the delicate, translucent fabric of the skirt.

Beneath the outer skirt are separate, layered undergarments, including a fine underskirt finished with delicate openwork lace believed to be handmade, and a pair of pale-coloured pantaloons fashioned from woven fabric. The attention given to these largely concealed garments is particularly appealing and reflects the care taken in dressing the doll.

The combination of the gathered silk skirt, decorative passementerie, lace-trimmed underskirt and separate pantaloons is consistent with 19th-century doll clothing.

The contrast between the doll's simply carved wooden body and its delicate, elaborate costume gives it considerable charm and makes it an especially attractive example of traditional European doll-making.

Measurements:

Overall height: 7 1/2"

Condition: Good condition, showing age-related wear consistent with its considerable age. The painted wooden face has surface wear and small areas of paint loss. One wooden leg is detached but is present and included with the doll. It could possibly be reattached by a doll restoration specialist. The other limbs remain attached.

The antique silk costume is fragile but, for the most part, intact, with only a few small holes in the skirt (see the final close-up photograph). The costume has been left in its existing condition, without attempted restoration. Please examine the photographs carefully for further details.

This is a particularly appealing 19th-century German Grödnertal wooden doll, retaining an elaborate old silk costume with decorative passementerie, a lace-trimmed underskirt and separate pantaloons.
