Antique German Grödnertal Wooden Peg Doll Dutch Doll 19th Century 7.5"

$95.00

This is an antique German Grödnertal wooden peg doll, also known as a Dutch doll or Grödner Gliederpuppe, most likely dating to the late 19th century, although it may be older.

These traditional wooden dolls originated in the Grödnertal (Val Gardena) region of the Tyrol, an area renowned for its woodcarving industry. Produced in various sizes, they were widely exported throughout Europe and became particularly popular in England, where they were commonly known as Dutch dolls.

The doll is fashioned entirely of wood, with a carved and painted head, a narrow, tapered torso and elongated, jointed wooden arms and legs. The limbs are attached using the traditional peg-and-slot construction characteristic of Grödnertal dolls, allowing them to be positioned.

The oval-shaped head has a simple, expressive hand-painted face, featuring dark eyebrows, black eyes, a long, slender nose and small red lips. The black painted hair is arranged close to the head, with a central parting and a smooth, rounded appearance.

The upper portion of the torso and neck retain traces of an old yellowish stain that has not been cleaned or removed, while the remainder of the body is largely natural wood. The lower portions of the arms and legs have remnants of white paint, suggesting the original representation of hands and stockings.

The doll has a particularly appealing primitive folk art appearance, with the irregularities of the carved wood, worn painted surfaces and simple construction reflecting its age and traditional manufacture.

Measurements:

Overall height: 7 1/2"

Condition: Good condition, showing considerable age-related wear, including loss of paint, staining to the face, and a detached arm and leg. Both detached limbs are present and included with the doll and could possibly be re-pinned by someone familiar with wooden doll restoration. Please examine the photographs carefully for further details of the condition.

An interesting example of traditional German wooden doll-making, with considerable character and appeal for collectors of antique dolls, early wooden toys and European folk art.
