Antique German Grödnertal Wooden Peg Doll Miniature Dutch Doll 19th Century

$85.00

This is a charming miniature German Grödnertal wooden peg doll, also known as a Dutch doll or Grödner Gliederpuppe, most likely dating to the late 19th century, although it may be older.

These traditional wooden dolls originated in the Grödnertal (Val Gardena) region of the Tyrol, an area renowned for its woodcarving industry. Produced in various sizes, they were widely exported throughout Europe and became particularly popular in England, where they were commonly known as Dutch dolls.

This diminutive example is of the type known as a “penny doll”, a name associated with inexpensive wooden dolls that once sold for as little as one penny. It measures just 3 3/8 inches tall and is fashioned entirely of wood, with a carved and hand-painted head, a narrow, tapered torso and elongated, jointed wooden arms and legs. The limbs are attached using the traditional peg-and-slot construction characteristic of Grödnertal dolls.

The doll has a particularly appealing hand-painted face, with simple black eyebrows and eyes, rosy pink cheeks and a tiny red mouth. The black painted hair is arranged close to the head, with a smooth, rounded appearance.

The head, neck and upper chest retain much of their original white painted finish, while the remainder of the torso and limbs are largely natural wood. Remnants of white paint on the lower arms and legs suggest the original representation of hands and stockings.

The doll has a wonderful primitive folk art appearance, with its simple carved features, slender proportions and worn painted surfaces reflecting the traditional craftsmanship of these early wooden toys.

Despite its small size, the doll retains all four articulated limbs, which remain attached to the body.

Measurements:

Overall height: 3 3/8"

Condition: Very good condition, with all four limbs intact and attached. There is age-related wear, including loss of paint. Please examine the photographs carefully for further details of the condition.

A delightful small example of traditional German wooden doll-making, with considerable character and appeal for collectors of antique dolls, early wooden toys, miniatures and European folk art.
