Antique Bisque Child Figurine on Shell-Form Base with Natural Seashells c.1890–1910

This antique bisque figurine depicts a young child seated upon a moulded shell-form base, one hand resting on the hip while the other appears to be holding a shell to his ear in order to “hear” the sea. The shell-themed composition is completed with several embedded natural seashells, giving the piece a delightful coastal character typical of decorative wares from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Although unmarked, the figurine was most likely produced in England or Germany around 1890–1910, most likely for sale at English seaside vacation areas. Its modelled features, hand-painted facial details and unglazed bisque finish are characteristic of the decorative figures that adorned mantelpieces and seaside cottages during the turn of the twentieth century. 

The child wears a white outfit accented with soft lavender detailing, while the face retains its original hand-painted features, including rosy cheeks, finely painted eyebrows and bright red lips. The moulded shell-form base is decorated with genuine seashells embedded into the design.

Condition

Very good condition. The bisque figure retains its original hand-painted decoration with light age-related wear and minor soiling consistent with its age. His nose demonstrates a circular brownish mark, but this is only noticeable upon extremely close examination. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
