I acquired this box 40 years ago from a 91 year old lady who was a member of a very important Montreal family - her home was packed with Victorian era treasures. The box is made in a shallow form and has a hinged lid that has a glass top. An old chromolitho print is inserted into the lid through the backside - chromolithography was used prior to photolithography and involved printing each colour separately rather than decomposing colours into a series of varying sized dots in the four primary colours. The scene is very charming - Victorian ladies and a man in a boat with their puppy greeting two ladies at the shore with their puppy. There are no interior compartments or tin lining, so I think that this was repurposed for use as a jewelry or keepsake box. It has brass belts with decorative buckles and its original lock. There is a skeleton key, but it doesnt work well, so I might not lock the box as it could be difficult to re-open. There is a decorative strip around the base of the chest. The interior is lined in some type of wood with a blue silk cloth lining the bottom. I believe that the chest is made of walnut. The piece does have a few small problems. There is a small chip to the base at the back near one corner and a piece of the decorative strip on the base along one of the sides is missing. The silk lining at the interior bottom is stained, the top of the interior wood lining at the side is missing and there is some of the original paper missing from the underside (see close-up photos). Finally, one of the brass belts was detached from the dome top, so I re-attached it with brass nails that have a brighter appearance and larger head than the original nails, but this doesnt appear to detract from the piece. The southeastern tribes, located in what is now known as Connecticut, included the Nipmuck, Mohegan, Pequot, Niantic, Narraganset, and Long Island Montauk, while the Northeastern tribes included the Penobscot, Maliseet, Pennacook, Abenaki, and members of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) nation. This handled basket measures 9 square by 3 1/2 in height exclusive of its handles. Unfortunately, this basket sustained damage at one of the bottom corners (see photos) - it appears that the damage may have been caused by fire as one can see blackish ends around the opening. The loops around the top frame, used to secure the basket to the frame, are missing in one area. The original owner used thread to replace the missing loops, but this is unraveling. The frames are fitted with hand-laced rawhide webbing, irregular in thickness and tension, consistent with late 19th- to early 20th-century Indigenous manufacture. Notably, portions of the webbing retain a vegetal-dyed orange tone, an uncommon and visually distinctive feature associated with certain Eastern Woodland traditions and early trade-era dyes.

The snowshoes retain hand-laced rawhide webbing consistent with late 19th- to early 20th-century Indigenous manufacture. The foot harnesses appear to be later replacements, incorporating metal buckles and more recent leather, reflecting continued use and maintenance over time. Such replacements are typical of working snowshoes, as bindings were considered functional components and were routinely renewed as needed.

The snowshoes retain wool tuft inserts in red and dark blue along the perimeter of the frames, threaded through drilled holes rather than applied superficially. Due to the presence of Hong Kong cord on the basket, it dates to the late 1920s through the 1930s. Hong Kong cord was adopted as a labour-saving substitute for hand-twirled sweetgrass in structural roping, but its use was discontinued with the start of WWII (1940). Still, there is some sweetgrass at the bottom edge of the lid as well as to the top centre as a nod to tradition. The ash splint is dyed in a pink tone. It was made by a member of an East Coast Native American Indian tribe - Wabanaki, either Micmac, Pasamaquoddy or Penobscot. I do know that sweetgrass was considered sacred and used particularly by the Micmac, although the other Wabanaki tribes also used it. This lidded basket measures 6 1/4” in diameter and about 4 1/2” in height. I’m unsure of the intended purpose, but I assume that it was meant to hold sewing supplies. It is in very good condition - maybe slight fading to the colour at the top, but nothing pronounced. The feet appear to be more decorative than functional as the centre bottom is lower than the feet - the feet do inhibit the basket from tipping.
