It has a couple of unique folds in the straw just to give it a little more mystery.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis lovely concoction of a hat was designed by Patrick de Barentzen and executed by his partner, the milliner Monsieur Gilles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt measures 8 1\/2 x 9 inches across and the crown measures 3 inches in height.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAge: 1960s (1963)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLabel: Patrick de Barentzen - Monsieur Gilles - Made in Italy\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs I became more intrigued by this little hat I took the time to find out more information about this designer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found an article from January 1963 in the St. Petersburg, FL newspaper by Louise Hickman that makes mention of these particular designs. Hats by his partner Monsieur Gilles were modeled along pith helmet lines...this would have been the teeny beanie version.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDe Barentzen was born and raised in France to a Danish father and French mother. He apprenticed \u0026amp; worked with Jacques Fath in the 50s up until Fath's death in November of 1954.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a quote from the 1959 pages of Vogue Magazine that states: \"23-year-old Patrick de Barentzen was described as \"the daring young man of the Italian couture whose collection is full of dash, fun and ideas\". He quickly rose as a darling of Italian designers along with the likes of Galitzine, Valentino, Simonetta, Fabiani, Capucci, Fontana, and Forquet. Couture quality tailoring. The inside is as pretty as the outside.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother article from November 64 from Toledo, Ohio, by Mary Jane Spencer states that he left France to move to Italy after Fath's death due to his great sadness. These stores would then be allowed to reproduce these styles. These were generally of a high quality. These firms would then be allowed to sell the articles with the label indicating they were an adaptation or reproduction of the Parisian couturiers style. The rhinestones form a star shape in the centre and are also interspersed with the pearls as well as dotting the outside edge of the hat. In addition there is some metallic gold rickrack, visible along the edge of the centre of the hat and also within the body covered by pearls. The hat has a wire loop at either side, used to hold the hat onto the head, probably with the help of bobby pins. The label on the interior of the hat reads “Alfreda Inc. Paris New York” - Alfreda is known to have been active during the 1940s and 50s. The retailer’s label reads “French Fashions Steiger’s Springfield”. Steiger’s was a New England department store chain founded in Holyoke in 1896 - the Springfield store was considered the flagship store. The hat is in very good condition - there may be some rhinestones missing in the centre as the shape doesn’t appear complete, but it may simply have been made that way - in any case, this doesn’t detract from the hat, at least not in my opinion. The interior is lined in printed lamé fabric. The hat is sized as a 22 1\/2, so should fit a range of medium to large sized heads. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis is a wonderful quality vintage cocktail hat -
