This is a rare find that came out of an old general store - two unused ties, still in their original box, made by W.A. Brophey of Montreal, Canada.  W.A. Brophey, has an interesting history himself.  After working for Tooke for 20 years, he founded an umbrella company, but returned to Tooke seven years later.  Ten years later, he started up his umbrella company again, the W.A. Brophey Co. Ltd, which also produced neckwear, such as these ties  Brophey died in 1938, but the company continued production, undergoing a name change during the early 1960s.  These ties are difficult to date precisely, but certainly 1930s to 1940s era - they definitely pre-date the “bold look”, which featured wilder patterns and wider ends - the bold look was introduced in 1948.  The blue tie has an art deco design featuring a red “bolt” against a patterned light blue diagonal band, both against a navy blue background.  It measures 49 1/2” in length and has a width of 3 3/8” at its widest.  It is lined in white, which is atypical, and the label reads “Quality Necktie Imported Fabric Styled by Brophey”.  The other tie is a simple plain silver grey coloured tie.  It measures 48” in length and has a width of 3 7/8” at its widest.  It also is lined, and the label reads “Original Wool-o-Silk by Brophey”.  The blue tie is in excellent like-new condition but the plain grey tie, unfortunately, is lighter in colour underneath the foil band - with time the rest of the tie darkened slightly, but the foil band protected the area under it, so it is lighter in colour.  There may also be a little bit of soiling/wear to one area of the grey tie.  You could use the art deco tie, but the grey one would be primarily for display.  The box has some edge wear and one corner tear to the cover.  The label reads “Brophey Neckwear Shape No. 100 Silk No Silk No Silk No 1/2 Doz.”  It is unusual to find unused old stock ties like this - great additions to a collection!
