Vintage 1920s Tie Red Knitted Silk Necktie Welch Margetson
Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is a rare vintage 1920s tie that is made of knitted red striped silk. The label reads “Welch, Margetson & Co Ltd London England All Silk”. I’ve included photos of pages from a Welch, Margetson catalog dating to 1920 as well as a photo of F Scott Fitzgerald wearing a similar tie. Knitted ties during the 1920s and into the 1930s were long and narrow with square ends. This vintage 1920s tie has an interesting construction, thinner and with a finer knit in the area that would come into contact with the neck - please view the close-up photos. This tie is clean and ready to wear - it is my husband’s and he has owned it for decades, acquired at a time when you could find older examples like this. The silk is woven in horizontal red bands alternating with blended black, red and white bands, very jazz age. This vintage 1920s tie measures 47” in length and has a width of 1 7/8”. Welch, Margetson & Co was established in 1832 and specialized in men’s shirts, ties, scarves and braces - they were acquired by Viyella in 1968.
This is a rarely seen vintage 1920s tie - fabulous colour!
