This is a wonderful 1970s mod style mens grey suit, designed by Hardy Amies of London.  The suit is comprised of a jacket and a pair of pants.  The fabric is pure wool made in a gray flannel color .  The jacket is made in a long style.  The shoulders of the jacket are padded and the peaked lapels are fairly wide.  It has a two button double breasted closure with six buttons in all and four buttons at the end of the sleeve.  There is a flapped pocket at the left side, a double pocket at the right side and as well as a pocket at the left breast.  The jacket is fully lined in Hardy Amies signature shield logo printed fabric with white lining in the sleeves.  It has three interior pockets.  The pants have a straight cut front with a rounded pocket at either side.

Age: 1972 - 1976.  The ACWA union label on the interior pocket was used between 1962 and 1976.  The Simpsons label provides further evidence as to age (read below)

Label: Designed for Simpsons by Hardy Amies London.  Hardy Amies (1909-2003), of course, is a legendary British designer.  He started designing in 1937, but was recruited into British Intelligence during WWII.  After WWII, he established his business on Savile Row producing bespoke suits.  In 1959, he became one of the first European designers to produce ready-to-wear by entering into an agreement to design for Hepworths.  He is noted for having designed the wardrobe for Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” and for his long association with Queen Elizabeth II, for whom he designed several gowns for notable occasions from 1950 until his death.  He was knighted in 1989.

Simpsons was a good quality department store located in Montreal, in business from 1858 until 1978, when it was bought by the Hudson’s Bay Company.  It had been known as the Robert Simpson Co., then as Simpson’s, but dropped the apostrophe in 1972 due to pressure in Quebec to increase francization of services.

Despite the problems to the lining, this is a very nice quality suit designed by renowned British designer.....priced to allow for some repair....
