1950s Vintage US Navy Pea Coat PN Personnelman Petty Officer

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is an authentic vintage US Navy pea coat using a quality heavy duty wool in a navy blue colour.  The patch on the left sleeve of this vintage US Navy pea coat is that of a Personnelman (PN), Petty Officer 2nd class.  The Personnelman was responsible for maintaining personnel records and counselling enlisted Navy personnel in regards to training, education, and job opportunities.  The position of Personnelman was created in 1948, so this jacket is post-WWII, but from the look of the label, I think that it dates to the 1950s.  The label has the name of the original owner and his name and service number is stencilled in white on the lining in a number of places.  This vintage US Navy pea coat has a collar and lapels typical of a pea coat and has a six button front.  There are an additional two buttons located under the collar so that you can cover the neck by folding the lapels.  There is a vertical jetted pocket at either side.  The shoulders of this vintage US Navy pea coat are squared and slightly padded.  All buttons are impressed with an anchor.

Sizing: Size 36 is indicated on the tailor’s label, and although this vintage US Navy pea coat should fit a small size, please rely on the following measurements for fit, comparing them to another coat and taking into consideration the thickness of the wool:

Shoulders: 18 1/2” across seam-to-seam

Sleeves: 24” long from the shoulder seam

Sleeve Inseam: 17 1/2”

Chest: 41” around, taken under the arms, 20 1/2” across pit-to-pit

Waist: 40”

Overall length: 31“, taken at the back from the neck seam

Condition: This vintage US Navy pea coat is in excellent condition with no pronounced wear, tear, staining or odour, looks like it saw little use and was well stored over the years.

The wool on this vintage US Navy pea coat is densely woven, meant to supply warmth in cold climates.  Nice example that retains its original arm patch….
